We wore the same dress
that one summer
just by chance
It caught our eye
and held it
long enough
Long, below the calf
flowing, drifting soft
in a delta evening breeze
Summer rain fell
teasing at the blanket
wrapped around a vacant city
Breathing out anonymity
underneath a cardboard tent
it does not rain much here
When there is not a home
summer never ends
and school is never over
The city spins rough against my knees
keeps me up late
takes getting used to
Sleeping on cement
sooner or later
I will come in
I will go inside
where rain falls
when I say so
When I know best
it is time to sleep
when I can
For days at a time
stone cold sober
on a real bed
It is my place now
a place for me
when it rains
No one needs to know
it will always be summer and
it does not rain much here
So now how is it
we wore the same dress
that one summer
just by chance
